High Tiber 2

Flooded Tiber River, December 2008

Under watchful eyes of emergency crews and city officials, the Tiber peaked last night as excess water collected over the course of its 250 kilometer route rolled its way out to the sea.  Early this morning, Rome mayor Giovanni Alemanno declared that all is well and that the city is out of the path of danger–at least until the rain begins again later today or tomorrow.

Rome lovers who have been following this story will be fascinated by the photo above showing Tiber Island  in the center, the Trastevere bank of the river in the bottom right corner, and the Jewish Ghetto and historic center.  In order to understand how much the river has risen in the past days, note the line of trees running along the curve of the Tiber.  Those, of course, grow on terra firma.  Note, also, just how far the moored boat in the bottom right quadrant of the photo is from dry land.
