The Death of Marat Remade

We don’t know who’s stenciling images like the one above around town, but here at the eCool Compound, we’ve started calling them the “All You Need” artists.  We totally did them because they seem to know exactly what it is we like in a graffiti image in Rome: a little history enlived by a bit of pop culture.

A few months ago, we showed you their take on Pauline Borghese, calling it “Pauline on Pay-Per-View” in which the iconic eighteenth-century aristocrat becomes a spray-per-view dominatrix.

Today we bring you their redux of Jacques-Louis David’s 1793 painting of the Death of Marat (cropped version below).  Though the modernized version of the political martyr still meets his death in the bathtub, rather than holding a pen in one hand and a letter in the other, as he does in David;s painting, he’s got a tv remote control in his left hand, while his right hand dangles down toward a soft drink cup and a play station control.

We spotted this little gem on a wall in the Jewish ghetto.
